트럼프 전 대통령이 최근 CNBC와의 인터뷰에서 암호화폐에 대해 전보다 다소 유연한 입장을 보여 화제

다만 트럼프의 말을 듣고 섣불리 축배를 드는 것은 위험할 수 있다는 의견도 있음

왜냐하면, 이는 (1) 암호화폐에 대한 규제를 강화하겠다는 의미로 해석될 수 있고, (2) 트럼프의 스탠스가 언제 어떻게 바뀔지 예측하기 어렵기 때문

지난 12일(현지시간) CNBC에서 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령의 암호화폐에 대한 최근 입장을 확인할 수 있는 인터뷰가 공개됐다.

과거 도널드 트럼프(Donald J. Trump) 전 대통령은 암호화폐(號貨幣, Cryptocurrency, 가상화폐)를 ‘사기(Scam)’라고 언급했었다.

그러나 최근 CNBC와의 인터뷰에서 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령이 암호화폐에 대해 이전보다는 다소 유연해진 스탠스를 보여 화제다.

듣는 이에 따라 폴즈니스맨(Polsinessman)인 도널드 트럼프가 ‘암호화폐를 화폐(결제 수단)로 인정했다’고 해석할 수 있는 발언이었기 때문이다. 

참고로 폴즈니스맨(Polsinessman)은 ‘정치인’을 의미하는 ‘폴리티션(Politician)’과 ‘사업가’를 의미하는 ‘비즈니스맨(Businessman)’의 합성한 단어로 본지(本紙)에서 만든 신조어다.

구체적으로 이 인터뷰에서 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령은 자신은 비트코인(Bitcoin)을 보유하고 있지 않지만, 사람들에게 비트코인을 지불 수단으로 사용할 수 있게 허용할 것이며, 이것은 “추가적인 형태의 통화(additional form of currency)다”라고 언급했다.

그래서 여러 언론 및 전문가들은 물론 많은 암호화폐 지지자들까지 트럼프가 암호화폐의 합법성을 인정한 것으로 해석했다.

그러나 트럼프 전 대통령의 말을 듣고 섣불리 축배를 드는 것은 위험할 수 있다는 의견도 나온다.

왜냐하면, 이 말은 곧 (1) 암호화폐를 규제하겠다는 의미로 해석될 수 있기 때문이다.

물론 규제의 강도는 아직 확인할 수 없지만, 트럼프 전 대통령은 언제나 “달러”를 중심에 둔 “미국 제일주의’를 추구하기 때문이다.

실제 이날 인터뷰에서도 트럼프 전 대통령은 “나는 하나의 통화를 원한다고 말해왔습니다. 나는 달러를 원합니다. 저는 사람들이 달러를 떠나는 것을 원하지 않습니다(I used to say I want one currency. I want the dollar. I don’t want people leaving the dollar.)”라고 강조했다.

그리고 “저는 전통주의자입니다. 저는 다른 국가들이 달러에서 벗어나는 것을 싫어합니다. 그래서 다른 국가들이 달러에서 벗어나는 것을 허용하지 않을 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 그 스탠다드를 잃는 것은 혁명 전쟁에서 패배하는 것과 같기 때문입니다. 그것은 전쟁에서 패배하는 것과 마찬가지로 우리나라에 큰 타격을 줄 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 그런 일이 일어나도록 내버려둘 수 없습니다(I’m very much a traditionalist. I hate when countries go off the dollar. I would not allow countries to go off the dollar because when we lose that standard that will be like losing a revolutionary war. That will be, that will be a hit to our country, just like losing a war. And we can’t let that happen )”라고 덧붙였다.

게다가 (2) 트럼프의 스탠스가 또 언제 어떻게 변할지 가늠하기 어렵기 때문이다.

그래서 미국의 암호화폐 전문 매체인 코인데스크(CoinDesk)도 “대선이 아직 많이 남은 만큼, 도널드 트럼프의 스탠스는 조금 더 지켜볼 필요가 있다”고 언급했다. 

참고로, 도널드 트럼프의 대선 경쟁자 바이든 행정부의 2025년 예산안에는 암호화폐 거래에 대한 보조금 폐지(Eliminates Tax Subsidies for Cryptocurrency Transactions) 등 암호화폐에 대한 규제 강화 내용이 포함돼 있다.

(도널드 트럼프 전 대통령) Well it’s take it its own life you know I do little things sometimes for fun and you know make money with it and but I have fun with it too uh …

(앵커) You mean bought Bitcoin?

(도널드 트럼프 전 대통령) No no no but I it sometimes We’ll let people pay through Bitcoin or will let people uh get involved in a new it’s you know if you if you’re think of it it’s an additional form of currency and I used to say you know I want one currency. I want the dollar. I don’t want people leaving the dollar.

And all I feel I feel that way but I will tell you it has taken on a life uh I did a thing that people smile at but it was wild we did a thousand sneakers so limited edition sneaker run the last one and and you could go through you know our crazy new currencies because that’s what I call them crazy to whether it’s Bitcoin or others and so many people were buying these things. So ultimately the last pair of sneakers sold for approximately I hear $450,000 it was a limited edition a run they were gold they were you know nice cute uh and we thought it was just a very small thing it was a branding thing and it was had a good time with it last the last pair uh sold for $450,000 people were going crazy for these sneakers you probably were too everybody was I have every every friend. I have has called me for a pair of sneakers, so it just took off.

And I noticed that so many of them were paid for with this, uh with the new currency. It’s a new …  uh crypto, you know, cryptocurrency. And I couldn’t believe the amount and I’m saying you know this thing has really, and other things I do, uh people are using it.

And you know I would be … I’m very much a traditionalist. I like staying with the dollar. you know that from when I was there it’s make the dollar the choice. I hate when countries go off the dollar. I would not allow countries to go off the dollar because when we lose that standard that will be like losing a revolutionary war. That will be, that will be a hit to our country, just like losing a war. And we can’t let that happen, And too many countries now are fighting to get off the dollar.
